The South Lyon Herald is out with an article about our efforts to start a track (http://www.hometownlife.com/). Thanks to Nathan for writing such a great article! There are also links on the following sites: http://www.mibmx.com/, http://www.waterfordoaksbmx.com/, and http://www.lyontwp.org/. Oh, and a link is on John Hicks' website. He's running for Lyon Township Trustee and is on our Park Advisory Committee. Here's a shout out to everyone who is posting or sending the link.
I had a friend ask me today what we really need in order for this to happen, and I told him that we need people willing to be a part of the organization running the track. Parents, BMXers, shop owners, community leaders--they can all help. I am working on getting the word out to the schools in South Lyon and Walled Lake in September--it would be exciting to see each school have a team. I also plan to go to churches, scout troops, and any group of kids on the street to promote this idea. If you're interested in helping, please email me. www.liseblades@gmail.com. I'm shooting for a community informational meeting in August.
About me
- Lise Blades
- That's not me in the photo, but would I love to do that! As it is, I'm just the Chairperson for the Lyon Township Park Advisory Committee, and to be honest, I'm also a big kid at heart. When I started thinking about what to add to our park, I thought immediately of BMX. Now, the last time I rode BMX, I think I was 10 and my brother converted my Schwinn street bike to something I could take on the track across the road. I vividly remember the thrill of the jumps, the wind in my face, and the police officer telling my dad we were trespassing. Thankfully the memory of the concussion is fading, but the experience is still fresh after 28 years. If you think about it, my experience has all the elements of what NOT to do. If we had a track in our community, kids wouldn't have to sneak onto private property, they would ride properly outfitted bikes, and they could rent safety gear. The idea of starting a track has been knocking around my brain for about a year, and now it's time to get your opinions. Tell me what you think, and I'll take it to the Township powers that be. My goal is to get a track up and running by the 2009 season--just in time to get my kids into it.
Give us your thoughts...
Next Steps
- Generate list of people willing to be part of the non-profit organization to run the track.
- Generate list of people who would ride at the track.
- Generate list of bike shops or businesses that would support the track.
Do you want a new track in the area?
